![]() ![]() Ever wonder why your phone doesn't have an FM radio tuner? Same reason. ![]() If suddenly you can get lots of high-quality content for free on your phone, they potentially lose money. Free TV on your phone?Īnother point of potential contention is getting ATSC 3.0 tuners intoĪre in the business of selling you data. That said, we'll keep an eye on this for any further developments. ![]() Pretty much every app, streaming service, smart TV and cable or satellite box all track your usage to a greater or lesser extent. The finer details are all still being worked out, but here's the thing: If your TV is connected to the internet, it's already tracking you. Sure, the return data path could also allow "alternative audio tracks and interactive elements," but it's the targeted ads and tracking many observers are worried about. Today, over-the-air broadcasts are pretty much the only way to watch television that doesn't track your viewing habits. This is something brand-new for broadcast TV. Not only does this allow a more accurate count of who's watching what shows, but it creates the opportunity for every marketer's dream: targeted advertising.Īds specific to your viewing habits, income level and even ethnicity (presumed by your neighborhood, for example) could get slotted in by your local station. One of NextGen TV's more controversial features is a "return data path," which is a way for the station you're watching to know you're watching. We knew the market would demand it, and broadcasters and hardware makers in fact are embracing it."Īh yes, targeted ads… Broadcast TV will know what you're watching John Hane, president of the Spectrum Consortium (an industry group with broadcasters Sinclair, Nexstar and Univision as members), was equally confident: "The FCC had to make it voluntary because the FCC couldn't provide transition channels. At the beginning of the roll-out, then executive vice president of communications at the National Association of Broadcasters Dennis Wharton told CNET that the improvement in quality, overall coverage and the built-in safety features mean that most stations would be enthusiastic to offer ATSC 3.0. While it's not a mandatory standard, many broadcasters still seem enthusiastic about NextGen. This will mean a temporary reduction in bandwidth for each channel, but potentially a limited impact on picture quality due to the better modern HD encoders. Two or more stations will use one tower for ATSC 1.0 (HD) broadcasts and those stations will use another tower for ATSC 3.0 (UHD) broadcasts. Because there's no new bandwidth, broadcasters will temporarily share transmitters. ![]() ![]() ![]() The concept of shared myths facilitates cooperation between strangers and has led to the unification of humankind. It’s best with more players, because then it’s harder to maintain control over all of the stacks. The different types of numbers are a good feature, because they slow down your brain a little while you’re trying to compare the cards in your hand with the stacks on the table. ![]() It’s hard not to get into this game and it can be quite competitive. And, of course, there’s the aforementioned issue with long fingernails.īut it’s still quite a bit of fun to play if you want a quick-playing game with a good measure of pandemonium. You will sometimes have to decide whether to count up or down on a stack-make the stack bigger and risk somebody else taking it, or take it back down but be unable to grab it for yourself? There can also be some stand-offs when a lot of players are holding 5s but nobody wants to play the 4. Okay, so this is not a game that involves deep strategy. Then all the cards are sorted back into their colors and you continue until somebody reaches 100 points. You count up the number of cards in your scoring pile and subtract the number of cards in your junk pile, and that’s your score. However, you don’t want to do it too often because cards in your junk pile count against you.Īs soon as a player is out of cards, they shout “Out!” and play stops. If you don’t want to play a card (or just need to swap out for something new) you can put a card from your hand into your junk pile and draw a new one to replace it. No double-fisting here.Īlso, each player has a junk pile. You can only be holding three cards in your hand at a time, and you can only play one card at a time-with only one hand throughout the game. Once everyone has their three starting cards in hand, you just all play at once.Ī couple things to remember: There can only be as many stacks in the center as there are players. Of course, what makes the game interesting is that there are no turns. When you play a 5 on a stack, you shout “Ratuki!” and you get to take that stack for your scoring pile. In the center play area, you can start building stacks-with a 1 or a wild card-and then the stacks can go up or down in numerical order. You start with your own shuffled deck of cards and draw three. The rules are pretty simple and quick to learn. One note: because this is the sort of game where multiple players are slapping down cards in the same place, it’s pretty easy for the cards to get bent during play, but I’m not sure that there’s much you could do about that. In addition to the numbers 1 to 5, there are also a few cards that say “Ratuki” on them which can serve as wild cards. ![]() The cards are colorful and easily read-though the mix of numeral types is intentionally confusing when you’re going at high speeds. There are 34 cards in each of five different colors, one deck for each player. If there were some sort of theme on it you wouldn’t really have time to think about it anyway-at least, not without losing. Okay, yeah, I have no idea what “Ratuki” is supposed to mean, but this is not the sort of game that has a real theme to it. Not a game for deep thinkers but it makes a good filler between games of Thunderstone and Settlers of America. ![]() Who Will Like It? I’d recommend this particularly for players who enjoy chaotic free-for-alls (like Hecho, for instance) that reward speedy card-playing and quick reflexes. Just watch out for long fingernails.Īges: 8 and up (though younger players may be able to learn it) It’s not a deep game, but it’s fast-paced and can be quite entertaining to play. Overview: Ratuki, a new card game from Hasbro, combines the stack-building of games like Skip-Bo with the speed and chaos of Spoons. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When my daughter was in kindergarten, she decided to write/draw one word for each vowel on the coconuts. The blender includes two 16-ounce cups with lids suitable for individual servings that fit nicely in most cup holders for easy transport. We made a blueberry kale smoothie and a frozen banana protein shake, and both of them had a smooth consistency that was easy to sip through straws. This specific model is our best value pick because of its moderate price, user-friendly design, and outstanding results. It’s no surprise that NutriBullet and Ninja blenders performed well during our tests, as both brands produce powerful, high-quality appliances. Since the cup size is small, you might have to blend half your ingredients at a time. The 600-watt model was a strong contender but didn’t wow us enough to beat out other top performers, and the Rx Cooking Blender was too expensive for not being user-friendly. The Pro 1000 model made our list as our splurge-worthy pick but didn’t surpass the Pro 900 for the top spot because they essentially performed the same, but the former is $36 more. We also tested the Nutribullet Pro 1000, NutriBullet 600-Watt Personal Blender, and NutriBullet Rx Cooking Blender. That said, it’s probably best to carry it upright instead of tossing it in a backpack or gym bag. While we found the travel lids easy to drink from, there was a very small amount of leakage after we intentionally knocked a full smoothie cup off the counter. The cups and lids are dishwasher-safe, and the blade requires handwashing, so just be mindful of the sharp edges. For on-the-go smoothies, two flip-top lids allow you to protect and enjoy your beverage while traveling. If you have small hands, fear not, you can use the included lip rings with handles on your cup for fuss-free sipping. This blender comes with two 32-ounce cups big enough for hearty servings but still easy to hold. When evaluating the consistency of a blueberry kale smoothie with ice, we were impressed that there was virtually no berry skin or kale pieces after taking several sips through a straw. It packs a lot of power into a small device, featuring a 900-watt motor, so it has no problem crushing ice and frozen fruit. The cups don’t have measurement markings to help with recipes.Īfter earning perfect scores across all categories, we named the NutriBullet Pro 900 our overall favorite personal blender.
